Pakistan ex-PM Nawaz Sharif given a 10-year jail term
Pakistan’s former president Nawaz Sharif has been sentenced to 10 years jail for corruption charges. The National Accounts Bureau (NCB) has issued a verdict on Friday. The court ruled that Sharif, along with his daughter Mariam, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
Nawaz Sharif is facing corruption charges in the Panama papers scandal case. Four corruption cases were filed against Sharif and his family members. One of these is the Avenphild case. Sharif was charged with illegally acquiring four flats at Avenfield House in London. The trial court had convicted him in this case. Sharif was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the court today. Sharif’s daughter was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and sentenced one-year imprisonment to Captain Safdar, Sharif Son-in-law. Sharif was fined with $ 10 million and his daughter Mariam was fined with $ 2.6 million.
Even though Sharif asked the court to postpone the verdict, The court refused the request. Sheriff’s wife has recently been under severe illness. Sharif and his family are currently in London for her treatment. Sharif asked the court to postpone the verdict as he did not return to Pakistan at that time. But the court refused this and pronounced the verdict on Friday.
Sharif resigned as Prime Minister of Pakistan with involvement in Panama scandal case. In the wake of the allegations, Supreme Court in last month ruled that Sharif was disqualified for not taking part in the future politics. “62 and 63 articles in the Constitution say that each member of Parliament should be honest and committed. He was disqualified as a Member of Parliament. So he can never continue in the post of Prime Minister, “the bench said.
