NDA wins No-Confidence motion with 325-126 AIADMK backing and BJD, TRS abstention
No-Confidence motion: Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioned Congress President Rahul Gandhi as ‘very eagerly waiting to sit early on the Prime Minister’s chair’. “Those who want to reach here in a hurry came here and gestured ‘get up. get up’,” Modi said with Rahul Gandhi for his act of walking across the aisle and asking him to get up for a hug. Looking at Gandhi, he said “only the 125 crore people of this country” get to decide who sits on the Prime Minister’s chair.
On Friday night, he replied to the debate on the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha. “Those who don’t have confidence in themselves cannot trust anyone.” “No-confidence motion is actually a force test for the Congress to secure their luck in the 2019 election. To remove one Modi, see who all are they trying to bring together.” He also said that “We do not do vote bank politics. We work with a Mantra ‘Sub ka sat, Sub ka Vikas.’
“NDA Government has taken many steps to benefit people and to double the income of farmers by 2022. But the opposition does not believe these facts. In particular, the Congress party does not have confidence in the Chief Justice of India, the Central Election Commission and voting machines (EVMS). Those who do not believe in themselves do not believe in anyone. In 2024 I pray that God will give you (the Opposition) the strength to introduce an unfaithful resolution. My wishes to all of you, “Modi said sarcastically.
Responding to the charge that he had become a “bhagidhar” (partner) and not a “chowkidar” (watchman), Modi said this too was true, because he was now a “bhagidari” in growth and development of the people of the country. “Today in the House, I was told that I cannot even look straight in the eye. How can I? I am a humble, poor son of a poor mother. How can I dare to look straight into the eyes of a ‘naamdaar’? I am a ‘kaamdaar… I am proud to say, I am a chowkidar and a bhagidar but not a thekedar (contractor) or a saudagar (trader). I am a bhagidar of the country’s development,” he said.
Without naming Gandhi, Modi said due to his “careless” allegation on the Rafale deal, both India and France had to release statements. There is complete transparency in the deal, he said. “I cannot believe that truth can be twisted, that too repeatedly on issues like national security. This nation will not forgive you,” he said.
And responding to TDP MP Jayadev Galla’s remark that the Union government should not kill “Telugu Amma”, Modi said the Centre has announced a special package with all the benefits that come with an SCS, and that CM Chandra Babu Naidu has sent a letter accepting it.
He also said while the TDP was in the process of quitting the NDA, he had called up AP Chief Minister N Chandra Babu Naidu and told him not to fall in the trap laid by YSRCP on special category status. “The TDP took U-turn while coming out of the NDA,” he said.
Modi said that special category status cannot be granted to the state as the Centre is bound by the recommendations of Niti Aayog. Modi alleged that the TDP is trying to cover up its failures by making false allegations against the Centre, “This is local politics, and scores are being settled in Parliament,” the PM said.
Friday’s no-confidence motion, the 27th in Parliamentary history, was the first to be admitted in 15 years. The last was in 2003 when the Congress party moved a no-confidence motion against prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Finally, after a raging 12-hour debate on Friday, the Narendra Modi-led NDA government defeated the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha by 199 votes. While 126 members supported the motion, 325 MPs rejected it.
